CD Review by Vladimir Koslov

This is a new album from Rio de Janeiro-based pop-jazz vocalist Ithamara Koorax, who has long been established as a recording artist in her native Brazil as well as in Europe, Japan and the United States. Some critics consider Brazilian Butterfly to be the singer's most diverse and risky record to date, and they have many reasons to say so. Although Koorax is normally pigeonholed as a "pop jazz" singer, the record sounds not exactly poppy, while soulful jazz and bossa nova intermingle on many of the album's 11 tracks, which are mostly long and have sophisticated structures, giving the listener just under 80 minutes of music. Those who will pay careful attention to the arrangements are unlikely to overlook percussion - it is often difficult to tell how many percussionists play different kinds of instruments on the same song.
